Welcome to the El Rito History Project
Step into the history of El Rito, New Mexico—a village shaped by generations of families, farmers, teachers, artists, merchants, faith communities, and neighbors who built a life along the Rito Colorado.
The El Rito History Project is dedicated to preserving and sharing that story. Inside, visitors can explore historic photographs, family histories, maps, biographies, timelines, documents, oral histories, and special exhibits about the people and places that have shaped the community.
Discover the story of El Rito’s early settlement, its acequias and farms, churches and schools, historic businesses, land disputes, political movements, and the remarkable individuals whose lives connected this small northern New Mexico village to the wider history of the state.
Most importantly, this is a living community history. Residents, former residents, and descendants are invited to share photographs, documents, memories, family stories, and other pieces of El Rito’s past so they can be preserved for future generations.
Come explore the stories, faces, places, and memories that make El Rito unique.
