Welcome to the El Rito History Project
Step into the history of El Rito, New Mexico—a village shaped by generations of families, farmers, teachers, artists, merchants, faith communities, and neighbors who built a life along the Rito Colorado.
The El Rito History Project is dedicated to preserving and sharing that story. Inside, visitors can explore historic photographs, family histories, maps, biographies, timelines, documents, oral histories, and special exhibits about the people and places that have shaped the community.
Explore the ancestral Tewa world of Sapawe, the beginnings of the Hispano village, and the farms and acequias that sustained its families. Discover the histories of San Juan Nepomuceno, Martin’s Store, and the Spanish American Normal School, alongside accounts of land disputes and the changes of the twentieth century.
Meet the people who gave El Rito its character: merchants and nurses, educators and public servants, musicians, artists, and neighbors. Biographies, photographs, historical accounts, and illustrated exhibits connect their individual experiences to the larger story of New Mexico.
This is a growing history, and your memories belong here. Residents, descendants, and friends of El Rito are invited to contribute photographs, documents, family stories, and recollections.
